Project Overview
Space of Hope Foundation for Human Rights (SOHF) implemented the Youth Participation for Peaceful Coexistence and Social Cohesion initiative in Al-Qahtaniyah Subdistrict, Ninewa Governorate, Iraq.
The initiative aimed to strengthen social cohesion, promote peaceful coexistence, and empower youth and community members to actively contribute to peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and community development. Through training, community dialogue, advocacy activities, and citizen engagement mechanisms, the project supported participants in becoming active agents of positive change within their communities.
The project combined capacity-building, community participation, advocacy, and local government engagement to strengthen cooperation between citizens and local authorities and address community concerns through constructive dialogue and collective action.

Project Objectives
Overall Objective
To strengthen peaceful coexistence, social cohesion, and community participation through youth engagement, dialogue-based peacebuilding approaches, and community-led advocacy initiatives.

Key Activities
Peacebuilding and Social Cohesion Training
A four-day participatory training program was conducted to strengthen participants’ understanding of peacebuilding, peaceful coexistence, conflict prevention, dialogue, and community resilience.
Training topics included:
- Peace and peaceful coexistence.
- Causes and consequences of violence.
- Human security and community resilience.
- Youth participation in peacebuilding.
- Women’s role in peace and social cohesion.
- Communication, dialogue, and conflict-sensitive approaches.
Interactive Learning Activities
Participants engaged in practical exercises and group work, including:
- Problem Tree Analysis.
- Peacebuilders Activities.
- Group Discussions.
- Community Reflection Exercises.
Community Dialogue Session
A community dialogue session was organized with the participation of community representatives, local leaders, and government stakeholders from Al-Qahtaniyah, Ba’aj, and Sinjar.
The session focused on identifying priority community concerns and strengthening communication between citizens and local authorities. Participants discussed key challenges affecting daily life, including:
- Water scarcity and limited access to clean water.
- Electricity shortages and unreliable power supply.
- Limited access to healthcare services.
- Shortage of qualified service and healthcare personnel.
- Lack of waste containers and waste management services.
- Infrastructure and public service challenges.
- Community development and livelihood concerns.
The dialogue provided a platform for participants to present community priorities and recommendations directly to local authorities and service providers.
Community Suggestion Box Initiative
A community suggestion box was established to encourage community feedback, collect recommendations, and support citizen participation in identifying local priorities and concerns.
Advocacy and Local Government Engagement
The project facilitated advocacy and coordination activities involving community representatives and local government stakeholders from Al-Qahtaniyah, Ba’aj, and Sinjar.
These engagements aimed to strengthen communication between communities and local authorities, present community concerns and recommendations, and encourage collaborative responses to local challenges.
Community-Led Awareness and Advocacy
Following the training activities, participants conducted awareness and advocacy activities within their communities.
Trained participants became local advocates for peacebuilding, dialogue, and social cohesion, helping to extend the project’s impact beyond the training phase and promote wider community engagement.
